Great PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade!

Review Date: December 15, 2009

I bought this hard drive to replace the 40GB hard drive on my PS3. I was almost about to trade mine in so I could buy a PS3 slim with more capacity. Searching for buying options I found out that you could upgrade your hard drive without voiding the warranty, and in only 20 mins with only a screwdriver and a steady hand. I was running out of space fast due to downloading movies and TV episodes. I reviewed several other drives before choosing this one. The Seagate stuck out above the rest for two main reasons:

-First being that the original hard drive in my PS3 is a Seagate, so if Sony trusts them so do it. I also decided to stick with 5400 rpms because that is the spec for all PS3s, and the 7200s have gotten some poor reviews for noise, heat, and no real gain in performance. Also I heard some 7200's are a little thicker than the 5400's therefore some do not actually fit in the PS3's expansion bay.

-Second, reviews (on another site) rated it very high, and nobody had had a problem with it. Also the prices on the SATA 2.5 inch drives have all gone down in the last few months so that was enough reason to make the investment. I highly recommend this hard drive for use with the PS3, it is quiet, runs cool, and was installed with ease.

INSTALLATION: If you are going to upgrade your hard drive use a #1 phillips screw driver (#2 is the most common) or you will strip the small screws that secure the drive to it's cradle. If you strip or bugger those screws you are looking at least a few weeks to order them from Playstation. Also, make sure you have a compatible (FAT32) USB flash drive so you can download the most recent update. I have used both Sony and SanDisk USB drives and they work fine. After swapping out the old hard drive the console will prompt you to update the system via USB or CD. You must download it from [...]/PS3. Create a folder called PS3, and inside that folder another called UPDATE, and store the update inside that one. Make sure you use all UPPERCASE or it won't recognize it. After that the PS3 will format the new drive for you. Happy gaming!

I upgraded my PS3 hard drive with this 500 gb. The process was very simple and the product works great. The shipping and delivery were quick. I have no complaints.

I expected this drive to work, of course, but I did not expect it to be so quiet. It has been my experience that Seagate drives are the most robust and dependable, but the reliability has typically come at the expense of noise levels higher than that of comparable drives. As an owner of the 500GB WD Blue 2.5" drive (which is quieter than a whisper) I didn't expect this drive to be as quiet but I decided to give it a shot anyway because I needed one in a pinch and couldn't get another WD model on such short notice. To my surprise, this drive is just as quiet as the WD model. Seagate has apparently made great strides in this department. It is my understanding that the WD model consumes slightly less energy than this drive does, but we are not talking about a large difference and I do trust Seagate reliability more than WD at the end of the day. So, in summation this seems to be a great 500GB 2.5" drive. If something changes down the road I will return and amend my review as I always do when new information arises.
Perfect PS3 replacement!

Got this hard drive for an early Christmas present this year to replace my previous 40gb HD. It works perfectly! I just removed the little black panel off the bottom of my PS3, unscrewed the blue screw, popped out the old HD, removed the hard drive case from the old drive and put on the new one, popped in the new drive, replaced the blue screw and cover, and bam you're done. After you turn on your PS3 it should say do you want to format this drive,, blah blah blah,, click yes and that's it. IF,, after you turn your playstation back on after replacing the drive and it says "Could not recognize drive" or something along that, try taking it all apart again and putting it back together. Make sure when you put the new drive in that it's completely pushed in all the way and that all of the pin connectors connect. Mine did this the first time I tried to replace it. So I took the drive out, put it back in, and put the blue screw back in and it worked.

Altogether, perfect replacement for PS3. Went from 37 gb of usable data, to 480 or so.
160 GB PS3 upgrade to 500 GB

I recently purchased this Seagate Momentus 500 GB to upgade my 160 GB PS3. I got the product earlier then scheduled from Amazon, which is always a good thing. I installed it the sameday, the installation was simple, if you did your homework on upgrading the PS3 HDD. After installing the new 500 GB HDD I turned on the PS3 and it sounds very quiet. I recommend the product for anyone who wants a little more breathing room in their PS3, its a perfect fit and works Great !!
